Cinc tortuges marines (Caretta caretta) capturades accidentalment per pescadors han estat alliberades a la Punta de la Banya, al Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre. Els exemplars havien quedat atrapats a les xarxes d’arrossegament entre els mesos de gener i febrer. Concretament, tres de les tenen pocs anys i un pes d’entre set i nou quilograms i les altres dues són subadults i pesen uns 25 quilograms. Els alliberaments d’aquests exemplars s’han a prop d’on van ser capturats amb la participació dels pescadors i les seves famílies.

Des de fa tres anys, el Departament de Territori i Sostenibilitat i el d’Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca i Alimentació impulsa amb la Fundació CRAM un programa per sensibilitzar i implicar els pescadors en l’atenció d’aquests exemplars atrapats. Segons dades de la Generalitat, durant l’any 2018 s’han recuperat 67 tortugues, de les quals 66 ja han estat retornades al mar. Enguany, els animals recuperats ja sumen una trentena.

Des de la posada en marxa del programa el nombre de tortugues trobades mortes ha disminuït sensiblement i per primera vegada s’han recuperat més animals vius que morts. De fet, la majoria del centenar d’exemplars recuperats han evolucionat favorablement, excepte en dos casos, en què els animals tenien una afectació molt greu i van acabar morint abans de poder rebre l’atenció adequada. Altres ports de Catalunya que també participen de la iniciativa són l’Ametlla de Mar, Vilanova i la Geltrú, Sitges, Blanes, Palamós o Llançà.
