Passar de l’smart city’ a l’smart country’

Bona part de la campanya de cítrics de l’Ebre aquest any s’ha quedat als arbres. Els preus baixos i la competència sud-africana han restat tant valor a la fruita que molts pagesos no han considerat rendible collir-la. No només s’han malgastat tones d’aliments en bon estat, també recursos, perquè abans d’arribar a aquest punt, els agricultors han hagut d’invertir-hi temps, diners, aigua, adob… i què passa amb tot això?

Fa unes setmanes, un conegut em deia que els catalans no hem de preocupar-nos d’impulsar el sector primari, ja que el producte que genera té poc valor afegit. No és l’únic que ho pensa. Fa temps que als nuclis urbans plana la concepció que la nostra fi és esdevenir una societat smart, connectada tecnològicament i eficient energèticament. Però un moment: té sentit ser “intel·ligents” si no som capaços d’autoabastir-nos? A dia d’avui, només el 40% del que consumim es produeix a Catalunya, no perquè els nostres agricultors siguin ineficients, sinó perquè fem servir altres països com a rebost. Aquesta manera de funcionar no només té uns enormes costos ecològics, també suposa fer-nos dependents i girar l’esquena al producte propi i a les persones treballadores i empresàries del sector primari.

El sector primari és un sector estratègic, per a les nostres economies i per a les nostres vides. No només ens omple el plat, també és des de l’àmbit rural que es manté la biodiversitat, el paisatge  i s’articula la gestió del territori. Així, esdevenir un smart country passa per defensar l’agricultura, la pesca i la ramaderia com a model de present i futur, com a projecte que inclou les necessitats del país i la seva gent.
