La campanya del musclo comença amb incertesa al Delta de l’Ebre, ja que els mol·luscs no estan creixent com en altres temporades. Amb un hivern de poques pluges i un riu Ebre poc cabalós, l’aliment que arriba als musclos a les badies dels Alfacs i del Fangar és enguany escàs. Les temperatures suaus d’aquesta primavera tampoc ajuden. “No creix suficient i com no fa sol i fa fresca, tampoc es crea menjar”, ha lamentat Miguel Carles, president de la federació de productors del Delta, FEPROMODEL. Malgrat la situació, els preus estan estancats però els costos de producció no deixen de disparar-se. Fa anys que amb les altes temperatures, a l’estiu, la cria es mor i, l’any passat, primera vegada, també exemplars adults del Fangar.

En aquestes condicions per cultivar de nou en compren a altres països i enguany el cost s’eleva a gairebé 2 milions d’euros. Segons Carles, la falta de sediments que arriben del riu frena el creixement del musclo, un fet que s’agreuja amb una primavera de pluges i temperatures suaus. A aquesta preocupació s’hi sumen els danys que provoquen al sector els depredadors, ara amb la problemàtica afegida del cranc blau, “més astut que els peixos” i més agressiu, que aconsegueix tallar i travessar les xarxes de protecció dels vivers i menjar-se els musclos i també les ostres. “Cultivar avui en dia és bastant complicat. Cada vegada hi ha més cranc blau i ataca més”, ha lamentat el president de FEPROMODEL. “Es treballa perquè el productor faci més qualitat i menys producció, així es paga més bé i es compensa una mica, perquè sigui més rendible”, ha dit. “El musclo si té carn, té la seva venda garantida. Si no és prou bo, encara que sigui barat, no el vol ningú”, ha afegit.

Un altre problema que incrementa la despesa dels mariscadors és la mort de la cria quan les temperatures es disparen a l’estiu. Aquest fenomen s’ha convertit gairebé en habitual en les últimes campanyes i fins i tot es va agreujar l’estiu passat, amb una mortalitat de cria i també de musclo comercial a la badia del Fangar. “No havia passat mai en la història del sector”, ha subratllat Carles. “Hi ha productors que no van poder recuperar els costos de l’any passat i a sobre han hagut de comprar cria per enguany”. De fet, tota la cria de musclo del delta de l’Ebre ha vingut d’altres països i el cost s’aproxima al milió i mig d’euros en cries de musclo i al mig milió d’euros en cries d’ostra, aproximadament.

“Estem en un corredor de la mort”, ha advertit el president dels musclaires. La sorra i els sediments del riu fa anys que provoquen taps a la bocana de les badies, l’aigua no es renova “com toca” i el problema, a diferència d’altres països, no se soluciona. Amb la bocana col·lapsada, la temperatura de l’aigua augmenta més, es moren algunes cries i es genera “un efecte dominó” que acaba matant-les totes. Al Delta és ja una reivindicació històrica i Carles insisteix en la necessitat de crear elements com són els trabucadors. “Aquí tenim la pitjor gestió d’un delta, comparat inclús amb Àfrica”, ha sentenciat.
