El Grup Balfegó  invertirà setze milions d’euros en la construcció i posada en marxa de les noves instal·lacions de l’Ametlla de Mar i la reconstrucció de les naus que van resultar cremades a l’incendi de l’any passat. A més, s’aprofitarà per crear unes infraestructures adaptades a la nova etapa de gestió de l’espècie que ha anunciat l’ICCAT (Comissió Internacional per a la Conservació de la Tonyina Atlàntica, en les sigles en anglès), després de donar per tancat el pla de recuperació de la tonyina roja. Les noves naus incorporaran la tecnologia i la màquina “més avançada” per a la manipulació de la tonyina i per optimitzar al màxim nivell el servei i la qualitat del producte.

Les obres de la nau on s’emmagatzemarà la carnada, amb què s’alimenten les tonyines roges a les piscines marines, ja han començat i es preveu que estiguin acabades a la tardor. Tindrà una superfície de 4.785 mestres quadrats i capacitat per emmagatzemar 8.500 tones de peix. També a la tardor es començarà a construir una segona nau on s’ubicarà la seu del Grup Balfegó i on es farà el processament de tonyina roja. Es preveu que estigui acabada l’any vinent. A més de la nova i avançada tecnologia i maquinària, la companyia tonyinaire aprofitarà les noves infraestructures per obrir-les al públic i donar a conèixer in situ tots els processos que s’hi faran. Les naus les podran visitar tant els clients com els escolars, reforçant la seva aposta “per difondre la cultura de la tonyina roja”.

Després de la campanya de captures d’enguany, la primera sota el pla de gestió de l’espècie, el Grup Balfegó ha comprovat que la flota s’ha de començar a “adaptar a les noves circumstàncies de la pesqueria”, com per exemple els problemes de trobar-se amb bancs de peixos enormes, o les noves figures delictives que tanta abundància de peix pot generar. Per evitar “les situacions arriscades i complicades” que suposa capturar bancs de tonyines roges de més de 400 tones, des de la companyia tonyinaire de l’Ametlla de Mar es proposa avançat quinze dies el període de pesca. La sol·licitud ja s’ha fet a l’ICCAT.
