Troben nivells baixos de mercuri en només 13 especies de peix i marisc de les 58 estudiades

Un estudi de l’Institut de Diagnòstic Ambiental i Estudis de l’Aigua (IDAEA) del Consell Superior d’Investigacions Científiques (CSIC) ha analitzat més de 1.300 exemplars de 58 espècies de peix i marisc de consum humà que estaven a la venda a mercats d’Espanya (Menorca, Mallorca, Eivissa, Alacant, Ametlla de Mar i L ‘Ampolla), Itàlia (Gènova, Civitavecchia, Alguer) i França (Marsella). El treball, publicat a la revista ‘Environmental Pollution’, sosté que de totes elles, els exemplars de 13 espècies sempre presentaven concentracions de mercuri per sota de les recomanades com a segures per la Unió Europea (UE). Entre elles hi ha la sardina, el seitó, el besuc, l’orada o el calamar.

El mercuri és un element tòxic que perjudica els ronyons, pulmons i el sistema cardiovascular i nerviós, sobretot en dones embarassades i població infantil. A causa de les seves propietats fisicoquímiques, es pot transportar a llargues distàncies i dipositar-se en ecosistemes aquàtics, on és absorbit per peixos i altres organismes. La majoria del mercuri que és ingerit per la població humana prové, precisament, del consum de peix i marisc.

 

Els resultats mostren que els exemplars de 13 de les 58 espècies analitzades sempre tenen nivells de mercuri per sota dels límits recomanats per la Unió Europea: sardina, seitó, mare de lluç, caramel (o gerret), besuc, orada, raors, moll de roca, serrà, escorball, salpa, llampuga i calamar.

 

Segons els autors, les autoritats sanitàries haurien de prestar especial atenció a les espècies de peix i marisc amb els nivells de mercuri més elevats i fer les recomanacions sanitàries preventives adequades, especialment per a les dones embarassades i els nens.
