La Comissió Europea es planteja etiquetar el vi com a cancerigen al 2023

La Comissió Europea estudiarà etiquetar el vi i altres begudes alcohòliques com a cancerígenes, però no preveu presentar una proposta legislativa fins al 2023. Fonts comunitàries asseguren que “l’abast exacte” d’aquestes advertències es decidirà tenint en compte tots els actors rellevants en la matèria i el sector. El Parlament Europeu vota la setmana que ve un informe no vinculant que reclama posar una “advertència sanitària” en les begudes alcohòliques per avisar sobre els riscos associats al càncer. Aquest document és només una recomanació, però ha despertat inquietud al sector vinícola.

El director general de l’Organització Internacional del Vi, Pau Roca, va criticar la setmana passada que la proposta no estigui basada “en dades científiques”. Ara bé, la Comissió Europea és l’única que té el poder per proposar una normativa d’aquest tipus i, de moment, no s’ha posicionat. A més, l’etiqueta no seria imminent, ja que Brussel·les decidirà la seva posició “a tot tardar a finals del 2023”. Després els governs i l’Eurocambra l’haurien d’aprovar.

 

Informe no vinculant

L’informe de la comissió especial per la lluita contra el càncer del Parlament Europeu recorda que l’etanol de les begudes alcohòliques està classificat com a cancerigen per als humans pel Centre Internacional d’Investigació sobre el Càncer (IARC). “A Europa s’estima que el 10% de tots els casos de càncer en homes i el 3% de tots els casos en dones són atribuïbles a l’alcohol”, remarca la comissió.

 

El text, que se sotmetrà a votació al ple de dimecres, demana “incloure etiquetes d’advertència sanitària” a les begudes alcohòliques i “la indicació obligatòria de la llista d’ingredients i informació nutricional” d’aquests productes. L’informe no fa cap menció concreta al vi ni distingeix entre begudes segons la seva graduació.

 

La posició de la CE

Brussel·les encara no ha revelat si seguirà el consell la comissió especial pel càncer del Parlament Europeu. Fonts comunitàries avisen que el primer pas és presentar una proposta per obligar a posar la llista d’ingredients i la informació nutricional a les begudes amb alcohol, com es fa amb els aliments envasats. El projecte de normativa es posarà sobre la taula a finals del 2022. Aquesta iniciativa no implicarà cap etiqueta sanitària, un debat que s’abordarà el 2023 amb una consulta al sector i a altres actors implicats.

 

Amb tot, l’executiu europeu no s’ha mostrat gaire favorable fins ara a equiparar el vi al tabac. “No etiquetarem el vi com a tòxic, és part del nostre estil de vida”, va dir l’any passat el vicepresident de la Comissió Europea per a la Promoció de l’Estil de Vida Europeu, Margaritis Schinas.
